A change in level of 1/2 inch (13 mm) is permitted to be 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) vertical plus 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) beveled. For example, an accessible route connecting an accessible parking space to the entrance of a golf course clubhouse is not covered by this provision. Accessible routes shall not overlap wheelchair spaces. This provision is intended to apply where a building is vacated with the intent to alter the building. Accessible routes must connect parking spaces to accessible entrances. Assembly areas that are subject to this part shall comply with the provisions of the 2010 Standards applicable to assembly areas, including, but not limited to, sections 221 and 802. The use of a handset by the communications system is prohibited. The clear floor or ground space required at elevator call buttons must remain free of obstructions including ashtrays, plants, and other decorative elements that prevent wheelchair users and others from reaching the call buttons. In addition to these requirements, covered entities must comply with the regulations issued by the Department of Justice and the Department of Transportation under the Americans with Disabilities Act. See Section 304.3.2 regarding T-turns. 302.3 Openings. The kitchen work surface shall be 34 inches (865 mm) maximum above the finish floor or ground. Handles, pulls, latches, locks, and other operable parts on doors and gates shall comply with 309.4. At least 2 percent, but no fewer than one, of the total number of general holding cells and general housing cells equipped with audible emergency alarm systems and permanently installed telephones within the cell shall provide communication features complying with 807.3. At least one bathroom that is provided as part of a guest room shall comply with 603. Seats shall not be sprung to return to a lifted position. 904.6 Security Glazing. The bench shall provide for back support or shall be affixed to a wall. 604.8.1.3 Approach. Within areas of sport activity, protruding objects on circulation paths shall not be required to comply with 307. Where a sloped entry is provided for wave action pools, leisure rivers, sand bottom pools, and other pools where user access is limited to one area, the handrails shall not be required to comply with the clear width requirements of 1009.3.3. Where provided, bus shelters shall comply with 810.3. 221.2.3.1 Horizontal Dispersion. 233.3.1 Minimum Number: New Construction. 407.4.7.2 Keypads. A grab bar 24 inches (610 mm) long minimum shall be installed on the control end wall at the front edge of the bathtub. (1) When a commercial facility is located in a private residence, the portion of the residence used exclusively as a residence is not covered by this subpart, but that portion used exclusively in the operation of the commercial facility or that portion used both for the commercial facility and for residential purposes is covered by the new construction and alterations requirements of this subpart. (5) Noncomplying new construction and alterations. EXCEPTION: Shower and sauna doors in guest rooms that are not required to provide mobility features complying with 806.2 shall not be required to comply with 404.2.3. Clear floor or ground spaces shall be permitted to overlap. Handrail gripping surfaces and any surfaces adjacent to them shall be free of sharp or abrasive elements and shall have rounded edges. The reach ranges are appropriate for use with those play components that children seated in wheelchairs may access and reach. The provisions of Chapter 6 shall apply where required by Chapter 2 or where referenced by a requirement in this document. 704.5 TTY Shelf. Where play areas are provided for the same age group on a site but are geographically separated (e.g., one is located next to a picnic area and another is located next to a softball field), they are considered separate play areas and each play area must comply with this section. EXCEPTION: Mobile or portable amusement rides shall not be required to comply with 234. In a building or facility permitted to use the exceptions to 206.2.3 or permitted by 206.7 to use a platform lift, elevators complying with 408 shall be permitted. 609.2 Cross Section. (1) Kitchens within housing units containing accessible sleeping rooms with mobility features (including suites and clustered sleeping rooms) or on floors containing accessible sleeping rooms with mobility features shall provide turning spaces that comply with section 809.2.2 of the 2010 Standards and kitchen work surfaces that comply with section 804.3 of the 2010 Standards. 604.6 Flush Controls. 803.4 Benches. 1003.1 General. 240.2 Play Components. Doctors offices, independent clinics, or other facilities not located in hospitals are not considered hospital outpatient facilities for purposes of this document. Although these requirements do not mandate handrails on stairs that are not part of a means of egress, State or local building codes may require handrails or guards. Every effort should be made to ensure that such alarms can be differentiated in their signal from fire alarms systems and that people who need to be notified of emergencies are adequately safeguarded. EXCEPTION: In residential dwelling units, seats shall not be required in transfer type shower compartments provided that reinforcement has been installed in walls so as to permit the installation of seats complying with 608.4. 407.4.6.4 Emergency Controls. 231.4.1 Cubicles and Counters. In facilities covered by the ADA, this requirement does not apply to work surfaces used only by employees.
